AM I BLOGGING YET?

According to Will Richardson, I have not been blogging.  Blogging is "Links with analysis and synthesis that articulate a deeper understanding or relationship to the content being linked and written with potential audience response in mind".

One of my favorite blogs' posts are very little more than links.  http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/

And another of my long-time favorites, that used to make me laugh so hard I would choke, http://www.fupenguin.com/  doesn't usually have any links.

Maybe neither is a "real" blog.  I use food blogs a lot, but have very little patience for the back story.  Honestly, I don't care where you are, who first made this for you, or what it is "reminiscent of"  (gag).  Just show me the photos, tell me it's good and how to make it.  I guess it's like porn.  Just skip the shitty story and get on with it.

In any case, here are a few of my favorite food blogs. Spoon Fork Bacon
                                                                                       Gina's Skinny Recipes
                                                                                       Hungry Again

Am I blogging NOW?

  1. Haha, who cares? I find it entertaining, and isn't that the point? Maybe we're not being deep enough or scholarly enough, but I think my job provides me with enough of that. Here, I just want to have fun! After all, how are we supposed to teach our students that writing is fun when we ourselves do not play?

  2. It is a little murky isn't it because he also talks about how blogs can be with students as a journaling space, a space for posting assignments and directions, and that there is also personal blogging, sometimes without clear themes nor directions. I suppose the essence of blogging includes some analysis, commentary, interaction, linking to other material that is supportive, etc. But I also think there should be some room for "non-blogging blogging" so that people can just go with it (as long as it doesn't become as mundane as too many Facebook posts: i.e. "Well, I fed the cat and swept the floor today blah blah blah..." :-) Enjoying your thoughts. Thanks. :-)

  3. Stacey, I am so glad that Ken linked your blog entry to the discussion that James started! I couldn't agree with you more. Who is Will Richardson to say what is blogging and what isn't blogging? The beauty in digital communications and expression is that it does not need to be hemmed in by some classical definition. We do what we want to do on a blog. We can be creative and do things that others have not yet done, or we can use it for whatever mundane purpose we choose--it is still a blog. To say it is not real blogging is pure e-snobbery.

    1. While I see what you're saying, and agree, I initially read Richardson's article and took his e-snobbery (love that expression Karla!) as a suggestion or way of enriching a blog. Though I definitely don't think that all blogs have to fall into his category (I too like blogs that do not follow his thinking) I think considering his definition might enable a blogger to strengthen or diversity their blog.
